It's no surprise that concussions are a number one concern for parents who have kids playing football. Some parents won't allow their kids to play football due to the risk of brain injury associated with the sport, and who can blame them?

This hazard is why the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association is now offering free concussion insurance to student athletes. The insurance covers athletes in grades 6 through 12 that are participating in sports sanctioned by the association. It will not cover kids who play on club teams. The policy will end up costing about $1.50 per child, but will be free to all member schools. It is meant to be a secondary insurance, so if the student or family already has insurance that will come into effect first. Wisconsin is the 4th state in the US to put a policy like this in place to protect student athletes and make sure they get the care they need in the case of a concussion.
