Teal Pumpkin Project Offers Inclusive Trick-or-Treat Options

Will you offer non-food treats this year?

October 9, 2019

The other day I was looking for some Halloween stock images and I came across the one above with the teal pumpkins. At first, it didn’t seem unusual but then I noticed I looked beyond the child’s basket and saw pumpkins painted teal as well.

I do recall seeing a story on the significance of this color around trick-or-treating last year but couldn’t remember the details, so I thought I’d look more into it this year for you.

The Teal Pumpkin Project is a way to provide more inclusive opportunities for kids with food allergies to enjoy the Halloween fun too. Now, if you have a child with food allergies, you’re likely already aware of the significance behind the teal pumpkins.

But, it’s also important for families without someone with food allergies to be aware too. If you want to provide non-food options (like a small toy or another creative surprise), all you have to do is put out a teal pumpkin to show parents and kids that you are providing an inclusive experience.

According to FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), an estimated “32 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.6 million children.” That’s 1 in 13 children, “every 3 minutes, a food allergy reaction sends someone to the emergency room.”

Did you know that there’s actually a Teal Pumpkin Project map? If you’re offering non-food options, you can add your house to the map to let families know where to go during their trick-or-treating adventure.

This whole idea came together back in 2012 by a proactive Mom, Becky Basalone, and you can read more about her here. Help share this information so that all children are able to enjoy a safe Halloween season!
