Review: Bug Taco and Grasshopper Slushie On-A-Stick (Wisconsin State Fair)

A glimpse of some new food items from the fair this year

August 12, 2019

Once I heard that two of the new food items at the Wisconsin State Fair were the Bug Taco (with crickets and worms) and the Grasshopper Slushie On-A-Stick (a popsicle) I knew I was going to try them both. Not because I was ‘excited’, but more so so that I could tell the story later – and look, that later is now!

I put off trying both items until the last possible day and I managed to get one of the last few Bug Tacos (via Exotic Meat Grill) before they sold out, I was lucky(?)! I would say there were definitely more crickets than worms in my taco; heck, I couldn’t even notice any worms (I think I would have preferred the worms to crickets actually).

The taco did NOT look appealing at all… not even a little. They say it comes down to mind over matter, just ignore the fact that you’re eating bugs and it’s fine. I can tell you, I am mentally weak when it comes to pushing bugs out of mind and it was not fine for me!

One bite and it was over for me, I just couldn’t pretend it was ground beef or chicken. There were no redeeming qualities in that taco. Even the tortilla was cold and lacking flavor. I wish I could say I finished the whole thing, but I just couldn’t stomach it.

NEXT! Grasshopper Slushie On-A-Stick (via All Things Jerky), which I knew wouldn’t be AS bad as the taco, a good palate cleanser with the popsicle. Yes, it had REAL grasshoppers in it, but it also had pineapple, kiwi, and orange juice.

There is a brief moment where I was in pain… not because of the flavor itself, but that brain freeze – they hit you out of nowhere! I did have to ‘just go for it’ when I got close enough to the grasshopper and there was a significant crunch and I started chewing it.

Also, I have been watching too many cooking shows (The Final Table on Netflix just featured grasshoppers in a dish) and I drop the word “earthy” in my review of the flavor. That is definitely a cooking show judge word, I would never think of that one on my own!

I can comfortably say, I don’t like grasshoppers, it’s official – the bug life is not for me! I’m walking away with the story AND a little sticker that says “I EAT BUGS” (I would probably change that phrase to either “I ATE BUGS ONCE” or “I ATE A BUG”).
