Season 14 of 'America's Got Talent' just premiered tonight (Tuesday, May 28, 2019) and there are a few changes from last season. First, Tyra Banks is out and Terry Crews is in as the host of the season. Next, Mel B and Heidi Klum are both out and in their places come in new judges Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough - joining veteran hosts, Howie Mandel (10th season) and Simon Cowell (4th season). You could see Julianne initially feeling cautious to hit the 'X' but as the show went on, she stopped apologizing for eliminating contestants and just did what we all needed from her!

If you're like me, you probably need a refresher as to who won last season, Shin Lim the close-up magician won it all. With shows like 'The Voice', 'American Idol', even 'So You Think You Can Dance'... I'm always thrilled when an act that isn't music or a dance group manages to win the series. Magicians, comedians... those are what I want to see from AGT!

Now, on to this season... I watched the premiere and I think I picked the 3 performances that everyone will be talking about at work tomorrow (I have to slip in a 4th because, until the last act, I thought I knew my 3!). If you're still reading, I am about to spoil the first episode - or as I like to consider it, provide you the cliff notes.

1) Eric Chien, another close-up magician, was instantly compared to Shin Lim and my expectations were set low from the start - no way would they start the show off with another epic magician, right? Wrong! Eric had me doubting him until, well... until the MAGIC started happening. Then quickly I'm mouthing W-T-F to myself. Then the next surprise, followed by another and another and I have to say, I was really impressed. Like... how?! Okay, Eric is a front-runner and deserves to go far into the competition.

2) Holy Crap! Kodi Lee has quite the story and I did not see his talent coming! His mother brought him to the stage and explained his background of autism and blindness but also pointed out Kodi's passion for music. Once Kodi started singing... I knew he was going to get the first golden buzzer! Simply put, Kodi is an inspiration. Perfect contestant for AGT! Once he finished his song, Simon was quick to his feet along with the crowd and rest of the judges. Incredible story.

3) Okay, let's lighten the mood with Gingzilla... the "7-foot ginger bearded glam monster all the way from Sydney, Australia." Gingzilla is a performer and as much as I don't want a 'singer' to win this show, this is an act that I can get behind! When Gingzilla walked off stage and then ran back on twice, I was laughing so hard. The question I have is can this act stay fresh after several episodes or will be become predictable? Time will tell, but for now, I'm hooked!

4) The 15-year old, Sophie Pecora, was an early favorite and until Kodi came out (and got that Golden Buzzer) - would have been one of my top 3 picks. She sang an original song about how she was bullied in the 7th grade and how that affected her. You can see her family tearing up off stage as she gets into her song - such a personal story that she chose to share to an audience of 2,000 people (and even more watching from home). I don't necessarily think that Sophie will win this season, but she will definitely leave a lasting impression!

So there you have it, the first episode of Season 14 of 'America's Got Talent' - do yourself a favor and skip the "Human Fuse" stunt... cool, you lit yourself on fire and flew through the air... it's an act that we see every season and there's really nothing 'new' to it. Dangerous, okay, but we've seen so many others do it.
