2020 Social Media Trends with JMatt and Matt Curtis

First episode of JMatt’s Social Club (Podcast)

January 6, 2020

On our first episode of JMatt’s Social Club, I invited Milwaukee-area Digital Marketing Specialist, Matt Curtis (Twitter: @CourtesyOfMatt), to join me to discuss our predictions for the social media trends to hit the new year.

The first big trend to make note of for 2020 is Data Privacy. Specifically, transactional updates and interactions on social media. Instagram has added “click to buy” to posts allowing consumers to click through to purchase products by the brand. Look to see Instagram integrate this feature more into stories.

As for the emerging technology side comes voice-purchase with in-home assistants (think Alexa or Google Home). We’ll also see more niche topic integration – Twitter is adding in specific topics that you can follow, Instagram has already added hashtags that you can follow.

TikTok is also growing at an accelerated rate! According to App Annie, TikTok was the 4th most downloaded app in 2019 (based on January-November data), just ahead of Instagram. Also, according to DataReportal via Oberlo, TikTok has 500 million active users worldwide, placing them at 9th in terms of social networks (ahead of LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, and Snapchat)!

Reddit started a new subreddit called RPAN for live broadcasting (think Facebook Live). So far, this feature has been leveraged by users of Reddit, but not in a memorable way by businesses. This feature is only available at specific times and with only a few days' notice.

Lasso is a newer platform that gives Facebook the ability to more directly compete with TikTok; there are also rumors that Instagram may integrate TikTok-like features within their app.

IGTV could take off in 2020. Users are starting to leverage story content in a new way by posting them as IGTV episodes. You may have also seen 90-second IGTV clips that encourage you to finish the video just as the limit for the newsfeed is reached (expect to see more of this tactic).

Contesting on Instagram is evolving to become more elaborate for ways to enter such as sharing the post to your story for additional entries but the perceived value of the prize doesn’t match the entry process.

Instagram will also be removing Likes, which will be great on a personal level for an individual’s mental health. But, for business brands, will it make the competitive review more difficult? Which metrics will marketing departments have to shift to, to see how well their content performs?

Ephemeral Content (aka content that disappears) may be on the rise this year too. Think 24-hour content (stories) or messages on Snapchat; platforms that don’t already have it may look at ways to integrate it for their users. Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and even Youtube all offer stories, what could Twitter offer to match this (is it necessary for them)?

Who will have the most active users overall for the year of 2020? Matt thinks Instagram could be a front-runner. JMatt thinks TikTok could pull it off this year.

Finally, a sleeper to pay attention to this year is Mixer, the new streaming platform for gamers that is competing for Twitch’s audience by scooping up some of the top talents.

It’ll be an exciting year to see what new innovations enter the digital world for technology and social media. We’ll keep an eye on everything and keep you updated with future episodes of this podcast!
